5 things tourists should know before visiting Brisbane

If you’re heading to Brisbane for a holiday, you’re in for a great time! But, before you arrive, there are a few things you should know to ensure you have a hassle-free stay.

Continue reading as I list the top 5 things to know before visiting Brisbane. Pay attention – these will definitely help you!

1. Visa Information

As a visitor to Brisbane, you will require a visa. You can find visa application forms with travel agents or at overseas Australia Diplomatic Missions. You can apply in person, or by mail as per your convenience. Many airlines and travel agents will grant on-the-spot-visas for up to three months as well.

2. Tipping

Tipping is not expected anywhere in Australia, and as a local, I personally never tip anyone for anything. If you would like to offer a tip as a gesture of good service to waiters, taxi drivers or porters then a 10% tip is more than sufficient.

3. Etiquette

Brisbane is incredibly tourist friendly and you can get by most restaurants and museums in shorts and t-shirts. Keep in mind that locals are incredibly proud of the city, so praises for Brisbane in the company of a local will make you a friend for life!

4. Smoking

Brisbane is largely anti-smoking, so be careful before you light up. Do not light up in public places or on public transport. Also, if you’re in an enclosed space, ask around before you smoke unless other people around you are already smoking.

5. Money

The currency used in Brisbane is the Australian Dollar. Dollar notes come in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 while coins come in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2. You don’t need to bother about exchanging your currency as most ATMs accept major foreign debit cards and dispense local currency. Also, credit cards are accepted just about everywhere.
